Review: A Stud 4 Sure (Finder)

This stud finder is about as manly as the bearded viking man on the label. VERY.

Initially, I was a bit skeptical. It’s small. It’s light. It’s yellow, and I have no idea what “rare earth magnets” are. That sounds like either a load of new-age hanky pank, or else they’ve crammed this sucker full of gold! But at $10 a pop, it probably doesn’t actually have gold in it. At least not the good kind.

This gnarly little beast finds studs faster than any method I’ve tried before, and I have given up on hanging more than a few tapestries in my day. Don’t get me wrong: punching holes in the wall is a pretty good workout if you don’t mind the splinters and sore knuckles. And tapping gently on walls for magic whispers, or echoes, or whatever it is you listen for the to find the stud is just one step away from crazy and wandering through meadows pants-less during a full moon in my book.

How it Works

Stud 4 Sure operates by what I can only assume is the technology of bats. And if you told me it’s origins were traced back to Thomas Edison I’d definitely believe you. These rare earth magnets let it actually stick to the wall telling you where there’s a stud. Since studs run vertically in walls and have several metal nails in them, gently sliding this along the wall will quickly give away the stud’s location. It’s like a rustic handyman’s version of Battleship that you can play all by yourself!

In my estimation, this little gadget is a giant step forward in the stud finding sciences. Abraham Lincoln himself couldn’t have made a better one if he had all the dragon scales in the world. Although he definitely would have used a lot more gold. Good ol’ Abe the Babe.
